One German farmhouse. Four girls separated by time, but whose lives begin to mirror each other. The tumultuous history of a nation in the 20th century. A joint winner of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize, Sound of Falling is a sensory and poetic novelistic epic.
At different points throughout the last century, Alma, Erika, Angelika and Lenka each spend a part of their childhood on the same farm in northern Germany. As the home evolves over the years, echoes of the past linger in its walls. The farmhouse bears witness to events both global and personal, with two World Wars and a divided Germany providing historical backdrops to the girls’ more intimate experiences of growing up – innocent friendships, playful pranks, deep trauma and the burgeoning comprehension of life’s limitations for women under different eras of patriarchal forces.
Unfolding in nonlinear fashion and preferencing sense memory over specific, plot-driven events, Sound of Falling melds past and present, with time moving forwards and backwards through the 20th century. Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, writer/director Mascha Schilinski’s second feature has drawn comparisons to the work of famed American filmmaker Terrence Malick with its rich craft and haunting detail, while Fabian Gamper’s ethereal cinematography hovers through space with ghostlike movements and voyeuristic angles.
