Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk

A powerful work of cinema. A documentary that demands to be witnessed. Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk offers an intimate, first-hand perspective on life under siege in Gaza, captured through video calls between director Sepideh Farsi and 25-year-old Palestinian photojournalist and poet Fatma Hassona.

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk is my response, as a filmmaker, to the ongoing massacre of Palestinians. A miracle happened when I met Fatem Hassona. She became my eyes in Gaza, where she resisted while documenting the war, and I became a link between her and the world, from her “Gaza prison,” as she named it. We maintained this line of life for almost a year. The bits of sound and pixel that we exchanged became the film that you see. The killing of Fatem on 16 April 2025, due to an Israeli raid on her house, changes its meaning forever.’ Sepideh Farsi

Fatma Hassona is part of a generation in Gaza, trapped in an endless cycle of war, famine and resistance. Combining raw immediacy with deep humanity, this film captures daily life during the current conflict through her eyes and unwaveringly optimistic presence. Her conversations with Sepideh, recorded over more than 200 days, bring us into the heart of the conflict, even while their physical distance and erratic connectivity underscore the dire situation inside Gaza. Amid the death and destruction of constant missile strikes, Fatma’s message remains one of dignity, humanity and hope.

Just the day after it was announced the film was going to premiere at Cannes, an Israeli missile killed Fatma and her family in what was alleged to have been a targeted assassination. Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk is an inspiring portrait and heartfelt memorial that not only pays tribute to the memory of Fatma Hassona but also reminds us not to look away from the injustices of the world.
