Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud's Berlinale Golden Bear-winner is a sensitive queer coming-of-age story. A potent, nuanced examination of a teenage girl’s forbidden crush and the creative awakening it triggers.
When 17-year-old Johanne falls for her high school French teacher Johanna, she knows nothing can ever happen. To help her get over her obsession she pours all her feelings and experiences into writing. When her mother and grandmother read this erotic journal, they are initially shocked by its intimate content but soon see that it has literary potential. As they debate whether to publish it, Johanne navigates the gap between her romantic fantasy and reality, and all three generations of women confront their differing views on love, sexuality and self-discovery. A sophisticated yet also light-footed depiction of family and young love.
Winner of both the Golden Bear and FIPRESCI Prize at this year’s Berlinale – the first Norwegian film to ever claim the top honour – Dreams has been hailed for its uniquely sensitive depiction of a transformative first crush, as well as its intelligent exploration of writing, inspiration and the power of taking control of one’s own narrative.
